Portrayal Of Women In Society

Jean Kilbourne's Killing Us Softly shows the audience how the media portrays women as just items. with it's third installment in the series, it continues depicting how the media portrays women and how these advertisements may or may not influence women in negative ways. although they may just be advertisements, their influence is powerful due to the fact that we see thousands of commercials each day.

I decided to choose the advertisement where a female has a Trojan condom placed on the left side of her bra. The reason I chose this particular advertisement was for two different reasons. The first reason is that the image depicts just her breasts and there is no focus on her face. I found that very interesting because instead seeing how beautiful this woman might be all together, her breasts are depicted as a tool to promote this product, her breasts are used as tools to influence men to buy this particular condom. The other reason is that her breasts are quite large. I highly doubt whoever made this advertisement would hire/use a model who had smaller breasts to promote the product. Her breasts are large which would probably intrigue most men making the saying sex sells a truth in our society.

An alternative to how most media portrays women is the dove commercials, where a particular group of women are shown for who they and that accept themselves for who they are. These women may be old, may be a little overweight, may have wrinkles, gray hair, etc. only to push the point across that media outlets represent way too many women as barbies when in actuality the women of dove actually look more like this in our society.

Advertising brings about a lot of issues and creates many problems physically and psychologically. How we should dress or how we should look are the ideas that the media instilled into our heads. We have been incepted.
