Lady Gaga's Alejandro

One night I was chatting online with my friend in China. During the conversation, she brought up the controversies of popular singer Lady Gaga. One of these controversies was the kind of sexual, violent video of Lady Gaga’s song Alejandro. And because of its content, this video was banned in China. People in China cannot watch this video on Youtube.com although this video’s availability on Youtube.com is almost taken for granted in America.

I was pretty familiar with this song of Lady Gaga’s Alejandro because I had been listening to it on my T-mobile’s radio channel every night. My first understanding of this song from its lyrics was that it was a story roughly about a mature woman’s view of the relationship between a hot girl and a hot boy. ^.^ The woman communicated her view through this song in an interpersonal level. It might have just been another love story song before I watched the video of this song on Youtube.com.

My friend said she was very lucky to be the last one to watch this video online before it was banned the next day in China. So I searched this video on Youtube.com and I found a very satisfactory one. It was about a beautiful woman told her story in a rather intrapersonal level how she suffered from having helplessly survived in a jail of male criminals. She was the queen among these men but she was also the victim when it came to gender discrimination.

As a result, in order to survive, she had to commit group sex as an only woman with a jail of male criminals. Throughout the video, the performance was very intense, thrilling, impressive, and stunning. Even if what is in this video is not an actual event, but it kind of surprised me how media can do to shape people’s understanding and perception of a song which its lyrics can be so much different from the story that is actually wanted to be told by the song composer.

I am not surprised that in the story a woman has to commit group sex with a group of males in jail in order to survive. Especially I deeply understand the criminal culture in which power is deemed more superior and can be gained through violence. It is a matter of course group sex is destined to happen when a beautiful female criminal is placed with such a group of male criminals who value power and demand power. Even though it is just a video, I believe the story could be an actual event in jail when justice is not serious and power is used arbitrarily.

  1. I like Lady Gaga's music and her style because she is very creative. Her video Alejandro gives us a perfect example of the psychological effects of the media in our daily lives as it may stimulates joy and or fear depending on the audience. Its sexual content is arousal. It can rise one's heart rate . Someone could have a sexual response to the content of her video. This video can rise a sentiment of dislike for men in a woman's heart. On the other hand her music may inspire feelings other than joy and fear because of the lyrics.
