Royal Distress

Princess Diana was on the spotlight ever since her royal wedding to Prince Charles of Wales. Because of her charitable work, Diana became very popular. The media reported everything she did and all the help she offered to the less fortunate people, not only in the United Kingdom but also throughout the world. It was because of the media that she was this popular worldwide, so many people knew about her because of all the newspapers and TV shows that followed her. Her personal affairs were well known, such as her eating disorders, and her weight. Diana’s troubled marriage with the prince was also followed closely, due to his long time affair with another woman.

Diana’s separation and divorce caused even more news, making the tabloids worldwide. Also making news was the romance with a new man she was involved with. This breaking news caused the paparazzi to become obsessed with her life and every move, reporting everything she did and did not do. I specifically remember one popular picture of her on a yacht with her boyfriend that was quite controversial and made it’s way all over. The media portrayed her new life criticizing her divorce and new romance in a negative way, as if her new life style was shameful. This paparazzo’s obsession with her life is what caused the fatal accident that ended her life. The driver of the car she was in lost control because of all the reporters who were following her. The accident happened at night on august 31st, 1997 and that next morning, within hours the whole world knew about the tragedy.

Every media source in the world reported on her death, some even did a special all day programming report on everything that was going on related to the late princess. They even speculated it was a death conspiracy from Queen Elizabeth, to end with Diana’s life. It was rumored that the Queen never liked her. This made the Queen less popular with the people since Diana was very much loved by everyone, especially at the time of her death. I was among those who believed that her death was not an accident. Although investigations were done, the authorities never found any evidence that it was a premeditated murder.

As a child I remember feeling sorry for her and thinking how unfair her death was. After all she went through in her life, after working out the courage to take her life back, leave the royal family, and have a chance of being happy, now she was gone. Right when her life was starting to get better, everything had ended. This princess’ fairy tale did not have a happy ending.

  1. Hi,there was a short period of time when I was at high school that I was obsessed with this royal princess. I read that this princess' shyness and purity was the reason why queen Elizabeth wanted her to marry Prince Charles. Because of her marriage failure, she started having all kinds of emotional and behavioral problems. Gradually, she started launching her charity work as a royal celebrity. It is a sadder event than 9/11 for me, I should say, because I was so familiar with this princess' personal life and thank you, media, for having told me various trivial things about her. In reality, it is very sad to see such a beautiful, benevolent princess go. I know she continues staying deep inside all our hearts and may her be happy in another world which can allow her much more freedom and love.
